Quantum computers, coral bleaching & Katy Perry
These are just some of the things we give a sh*t about.
Hello dearest Particle reader!
We’ve now had three articles released for our current content block, ‘Why should I Give a Sh*t?’
These articles range from how the heck does a quantum computer work, to tips on how to have a more sustainable wardrobe.
Using historical evidence, these three articles look to answer whether our past could predict our future.
Aside from these articles, there has been a lot of other science talk recently in mainstream media. Particularly, the fact that Katy Perry went to space.
A survey from the Particle office found that 100% of our colleagues do care about Katy Perry (and celebrities more broadly) going to space. Whether that was being excited about bringing awareness to space travel or being annoyed that space travel is a new display of wealth, everyone gave a sh*t that Katy Perry (and five other female celebrities) went to space.
Check out our first three ‘Why Should I Give a Sh*t?’ articles.
PARTICLE 101: QUANTUM COMPUTERS
While their processor chip may look like the one in your laptop, a quantum computer won’t fit in your laptop bag. Some are so big they require multiple rooms.
Their large copper cooling systems and glass tubes resemble a sci-fi chandelier.
UNPRECEDENTED MASS BLEACHING AT NYINGGULU
The Nyinggulu (Ningaloo) Reef, 1200km north of Perth, hosts a great diversity of marine life. Over 700 species of fish and over 300 species of coral call it home.
The reef is usually buzzing with activity, with sea turtles, manta rays and whale sharks some fan favourites.
Nyinggulu is currently experiencing a severe and widespread coral bleaching event. It’s not the first time this has happened, but it is the worst we have seen.
PARTICLE 101: FAST FASHION
Fast fashion is clothing produced rapidly and sold at a very low cost.
These items often follow trend cycles and are marketed to encourage consumers to buy more.
If we’re not up to date with the latest fashion trends, who are we?
It's a vicious cycle.

The greatest outcome of Katy Perry going to space was the revelation for many of Valentina Tereshkova going to space for 3 days and orbiting the Earth 48 times in 1963, after the publicity and media reports had to be amended to say "first all-female crew since 1963". Tereshkova's story is far more interesting.
